Walk Your Human Week & Featured Blogger!

Did  you guys know that October 1st -7th is National Walk Your Dog Week?  (Or in our case, walk your human week.)  Boy, is it a great week for it too.  Now that the daily temperatures are out of the 90's, Mom actually enjoys being outside with us. 

Today we kicked off "walk your human week" with a romp through our very own neighborhood.

Word(less) Wednesday - RAIN!!

We had a 15 minute rain shower here the other day.  Rain has been a scarce commodity around these parts this year.  We dogs hardly knew what to think.  Neither did the two legged kids. 

We did learn though that Rain + Dry Ground = MUD!!!

He must've been alright.  A few minutes later he was throwing mud balls at his sister.

These guys would rather watch than join in.  Mom says they're smart.  I think they're wimps!

 Oh, and mom says I have to tell you that our yard is mostly grass.  This is just the area we keep dug up - so we can have MUD!!!!

Doggie Day Camp For Kids?

Mom has been ridiculously busy the past several days.  Kudzu and I have resorted to chewing anything within reach just to get her attention.  If she isn't typing away on our computer, she's chatting the day away on her phone.  (ARGH... I don't get phones.  An excuse for people to talk to themselves, I guess?) 

Anyways, I digress.

She says it is all important since she has been working hard to get everything in place for our rescue league's second annual summer camp.  Scarlet got to go with mom last year.  We didn't - being that Kudzu and I weren't born yet and all.  Scarlet says it is good, big fun, and we will get to be there for all the excitement this year.

In addition to mom speaking about responsible ownership and bite prevention, she will be teaching kids how to read a dog's body language and talking to them about mourning the loss of a pet.  Each day we will have an area veterinarian visit with us to teach the kids important ways to keep their dogs healthy.  The kids get to do crafts and sing songs.  We even have a dog trainer that will be there daily to teach the kids how to train their dogs.  And each day, we will have a special demonstration from working dogs in our communities.  Then on the last day, we will have a parade complete with police cars and fire trucks!

We want to send a shout-out to Bert and his Vickie for the resources they made available for the camp.  Mom can't wait to share them with the campers.  (She also says to tell you that we have a SAR dog coming one day!!)  Thanks, y'all!

(It better be - after we've sacrificed all our play time with mom for the past few days for it!  Just saying...)

At the Lake

Sunday my family and I went to the lake.  It was fun, I guess.  I prefer the air condition to heat and the shade to direct sunlight.   From what I've been told that isn't typical for a Golden Retriever, but then again, I'm not a typical Golden Retriever.

I did not enjoy my mud bath nearly as much as Scarlet - she couldn't get enough of the stuff!

We saw several odd critters, but I wasn't allowed to chew on any of them.

Scarlet went for a swim and came out of the water shaking on me!  The nerve!!!

I preferred watching from the bank.

My smallest human even learned a thing or two from observing Scarlet's theatrics:

Only Child? Not Hardly!

Now what fun would it be if there was nothing but a couple of old folks around here for me to hang with.  My family consists of:  six humans - Mom and Dad and their four little people, six dogs including myself - four goldens and two "morkies" (whatever that is!), and three cats - I see no point in them but they do provide me with a bit of entertainment when I'm feeling especially mischievious!

Dog Days of Summer Doggie Day Camp for Kids 2010

Brookhaven Animal Rescue League proudly hosted its first annual summer day camp for kids in July. With 35-40 children in attendance daily, the kids were taught many ways to be a dog's best friend.


On Monday, Lt. Clint Earls and his canine partner, Felix, provided the kids with information on how to be safe around strange dogs. They also did a demonstration highlighting some of Felix's special obedience commands. On Tuesday, Mrs. Beth Adcock talked to the children about the importance of having a plan ready that includes your pets in the case of a disaster and being prepared to evacuate with your pet should the need arise. Wednesday, Mrs. Janice Wallace, groomer and owner of The Dog House, brought the adorable Miss. Cocoa and taught the kids the importance of proper grooming. Cocoa was a big hit with her pink and green bows and perfectly polished toe nails. Later that day we were delighted to have Dr. Bob Watson talk to the children about spaying and neutering pets to help control the problem of over-population in our community. Thursday was a real treat with Marsha Jones and Jo Beth Britt and their athletic Shelties - Spring, Rocket, Phantom, Tad, Chris, and Rowdy - performing an agility demonstration for our campers. The children were fascinated by the fast paced obstacle course and many seemed interested in learning agility with their own dogs. Friday finished up the week with a Parade of Pooches where the children's parents were allowed to bring the camper's personal pets from home to participate. Children without a pet of their own were provided with a dog from BARL for the event.

Shelter manager and dog trainer, Jayne Wells, was on hand daily to teach the kids different training techniques. The kids were encouraged to go home each day and practice what they had learned with their own pets.

BARL is blessed with the best volunteers around. So many wonderful folks poured their hearts and souls into making each element of camp exciting for the children. We had a great group of camp counselors that interacted so well with the kids and supervisors who carefully watched over the details of the day helping out wherever they were needed. Each day a different volunteer provided refreshments. In addition there were several people who worked behind the scenes transporting dogs, donating ice, providing craft supplies, and so much more. Without these special people giving so much of themselves, this camp would not have happened.


The camp provided a fun forum to enhance the children's understanding about caring for an animal. It also provided wonderful socialization for the BARL dogs that served each day to help in training exercises.

BARL consider's this first camp to have been a huge success and already has plans underway for continuing this tradition for years to come.

I was honored to serve as camp director for the week and can't wait until next year!
