I can't believe that this crazy, wonderful dog has lived in our home for six months already. It seems like just yesterday that we brought him home, and yet it feels like he's always been here too.
Since the opinions on this blog are usually expressed by Boondocks, I fear you might not have gotten to know HIM well. I wanted to take a few minutes to introduce you to the overgrown puppy that Boondocks is.
Here goes -
Boondocks was a big puppy when we got him. At nine weeks old, he weighed twelve pounds. Twelve pounds of cuteness that because of his large size, I often forgot his young age. Yet to think that at eight months, he has grown to seventy pounds and still has some growing to do, we might have a small horse on our hands by the time all is said and done. We affectionately refer to him as "Moose" often.
Boondocks is somewhat of a scaredy-cat. If something startles him, he has been known to crawl into my lap or hide behind me. It is really funny considering that he - the youngest of our dogs - is the biggest.
Boondocks does not have an aggressive bone in his body. He instead is rather passive. When a ball is thrown or a toy is dropped, he'd rather hang out at my feet than to wrestle his way into the pack to win the coveted prize.
Boondocks is extremely demanding. When he wants my attention, there is no convincing him to wait for even two minutes. Patience is not a virtue he possesses. He has been known to paw at my laptop until it is closed, unplug the mouse from the computer with his teeth, or take whatever else is keeping my attention from being solely focused on him from my hands and taking off with it. It is not as if though he is often without my attention - for he is always resting nearby. He begs for my undivided attention. And so it is given to him.
Boondocks is unaware of his enormous size. I wrote a while back that I thought Boondocks suffered from Morkie complex... (remember our smallest pack members Ohno and Joy only weigh four and five pounds). I'm not sure if he thinks he is their size or knows full well that he's as big as he actually is, but when he wants something, he will get in my lap or in my face to let me know. He often places both front legs squarely on each of my shoulders and looks me in the eyes.
Boondocks is completely GOOFY. You've seen pictures of him resting in the Morkies bed and know he has often removed them from the bed before crawling into it. What you haven't seen - because I have yet to capture the moment with my camera - is when he rolls onto his back, kicks a leg or wags his tail and then growls at it and 'chases' to catch the intruder. What joy it brings him when he does indeed catch it!
I understand that the point might be missed that I was to never again have a Golden after losing my Rhett in 2008, because we do have a house full of them. While our whole family enjoys each of our pets, each pet is also assigned to a person - Scarlet, was a gift for my husband, Cosmo a gift for our son, Rose Bud purchased by my daughter, and of course, Kudzu came after Boondocks - but I was not to have another big dog after Rhett died. Rhett suffered from hip dysplasia. Medicines never worked. Surgery wasn't an option. In the end, the right thing to do was to have him put to sleep. I vowed I would never become attached to a dog that was at risk of developing that disease again. Tommy and the kids could have their dogs and I'd love them, but they would never be mine. Ohno brought me great comfort and I enjoy him so much. (He's resting comfortably in my lap now.) But the time finally came when I wanted another big dog of my very own, and Boondocks was the Golden Miracle that landed in my arms and heart
Over the past six months, Boondocks has brought me so much joy and happiness. Even in his most demanding state, I cannot look him in the eyes without smiling. Right now as I am typing from my perch, he is at my side. His love for me cannot be misunderstood. God has sent me a friend neatly packaged in the shape of a beautiful golden retriever. I am so thankful for Boondocks and look forward to spending the next fifteen years enjoying his antics.

I started this blog the day after Boondocks came home. I had NO IDEA that "dog bloggers" existed. Boy, have I been surprised. I'm not sure there is a better community of folks anywhere on the world wide web. In six months - we have posted over a hundred entries, gained over 125 followers, gained over 300 fans on Facebook and Twitter, and had more than 11,000 page views. That honestly blows my mind! We appreciate each of you and consider you friends. Thanks for following our journey. We love you all!
What a love bug and a beautiful boy! I worked for a holistic vet many years ago and we saw lots of Goldens. I swore I would never have one, mainly because they are too beautiful and sweet and I would never be able to discipline one properly or refuse them anything while looking at that gorgeous Golden face.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your beautiful boy!

I really enjoyed this post! I love how Boondocks helped to fill an empty place in your heart. I know all too well how a precious puppy can do that.
Isn't it just amazing what an impact a loving pup can have on your life? Beautiful post - we all think Boondocks is a very lucky boy to have found himself such a wonderful Mom and loving family.

such a sweet pup! it's funny that the big pups are the ones that never know their real size and the small ones think they are 10 times as big as what they really are. ;)

Boondock's size brought me to this post, but his sweetness kept me reading it all. What an adorable pup!

Love the "growing up" shots - particularly July. :)
ReplyDeleteMy sister fell in love with goldens...and through her...so did I! I already had three dogs though...so adding a golden to the mix wasn't acceptable to my husband...who actually preferred only one! Boondocks is one totally loveable pooch...so adorable and like you said, you couldn't ask for a better friend and we are proud to get to know the both of you through your blog!
