The Great Kudzu

Earlier this week I briefly introduced you to my new brother, Kudzu.  He is healing up really nicely and is quite the cool pup.  The kids seem to really like him which is good because he is drawn to them.  Our resident 'alpha' dog, Ohno (aka Mr. Grumpy Pants) isn't particularly fond of him. Mom says he'll learn to love him though.  Kudzu seems to be trying to eat us out of house and home.  Mom thought I ate a lot!  HA!!  The vet says that as he continues to heal, he burns more calories and will have a bigger appetite.

It's hard not to feel sorry for Kudzu, but Mom says that doesn't help him one single bit.  From what I understand his life was kind of chaotic before coming home with us.  His first owner had a lot of land and Kudzu roamed free.  This guy worked away from home and was gone sometimes days at a time.  Family and neighbors stopped by to feed him while his owner was out.  (Mom says she thinks that adds to his eating problems.  She's not entirely convinced that he is use to being fed two square meals a day.)  Then when he got caught in the hammock, he was all alone and not found for several hours.  We are all extremely grateful for the vet that footed the cost of the bill to save him rather than to put him down as his previous owner had requested.

Life is good for Kudzu now though.  He is part of a family who adores him.  Instead of acres of land to roam, he lives inside.  Instead of being at the mercy of folks who don't care about him to be fed at their convenience, he is fed on a strict schedule twice a day.  Instead of not having a visible purpose, he is now being trained to be a therapy dog.  Mom says because of his new found appreciation for life, he may just make the best therapy dog ever.  (Of course, we know that's not right because that title will one day belong to me!)

I really like Kudzu.  He's only a few weeks older than me.  He likes playing with me a lot.  Mom says she's proud that she doesn't have to remind me to be gentle cause I already am.  We are destined to have many great adventures together.

Life is good!

  3. So, ok, he might be one of the greatest therapy dogs but only because his little brother boondocks is showing him the way.

Wouldn't it be cool if one day all three of us and the other cool therapy dogs we know could all get together in one big room and therapy the brains out of everyone.

I can just see all of us showing up at our childrens hospital and lovin the kids. I think Kudzu would have a special positive affect on some of the kids I meet there.

Be cool Big Brother, the Kudzu is watching.

    Love

  4. Hi Y'all,

There's always room for another great Therapy dog. He'll be a great example for handicapped kids who need a positive example.

Show him the ropes Boondocks! Having him be extra special is a great reflection on you and only goes to show how great a Therapy dog you are.

    Y'all come by now,
    Hawk aka BrownDog

  6. This is such great news!!! As you may know, we've been fostering Goldens for over 10 years now, and have had some that came to us and were so focused on food and even water (gulping as much as they can!!). But you're right, once they learn that they're going to always have what they need, the focus and sometimes obsession with it goes away.

I hope you're all having a great weekend!!!

  7. Kudzu is such a lucky pup to have had such a wonderful vet AND now to have such a fantastic home. Our Mom used to free feed but switched to twice a day a few years ago - what a difference it makes. We send our very best sibe vibes to Kudzu and great big hugs to all of you for helping him.

  9. I am so very happy for you and your new brother. I know how tough it is to recover from surgery. Glad you can give him all the love, food and training he needs.

And thanks for all your prayers and thoughts for my and my healing. Mommy says I am doing better tonight. You are a great friend.

  12. Well, it's nice to meet Kudzu! Great name for a great pup! I am so glad he is now with you & your family. His previous owner sure didn't care much about him. Sometimes I wonder, why do people bother getting a dog in the 1st place? Sigh. I think you are right. He'll probably be a good therapy dog too.

Looking forward to reading more about him!
